I believe that long term benefit from changing eating habits and patterns can only be achieved if the method is simple and reliable and can be easily applied in everyday life. Deprivation and weighing food may provide some short term benefits but do not translate into behavioural change. The Zone has provided me with the tool to lose 22 kilograms and to maintain that weight loss. It has become so much a part of my everyday life that it requires no effort.

As a personal trainer I deal with a lot of people who have very different views on how to eat to get in shape and stay healthy and most of the time they are very far from the ideal balanced healthy eating plan that Zone nutrition advocates. I followed the Zone for my preparation for the Wellington body- building champs where I won the overall title. I was able to eat good food, build muscle and keep my fat levels down. I found getting into contest shape far less stressful and my eating didn't differ significantly from my normal off-season diet. This meant that my normal lifestyle patterns were not disrupted.

Its been two weeks that I've been happily living in the Zone. Today I measured my waist, since my clothes were starting to feel rather loose - and found it was 8 cm smaller than it was a fortnight ago. Not sure whether this is a lot or just average, but it's great! I have followed the instructions to the letter - though the last fortnight has included quite a few meals away from home, plus a three-day sailing trip - and have found it easy to stay in the Zone. Love the food - and I know my body does too. Also love the higher seratonin! (And the clear head, the extra energy, and the increased agility from the lighter body.) Just a quick note to say thanks, both for the latestnewsletter (excellent info on lentils - I was hoping you'dsay something along these lines) and to note that I have been eating in the Zone for just over two years now. It'sbecome second nature to me. Occasionally I have to depart from it (not often) and I am always struck by how unpleasant it feels to eat too much carbohydrate. Such a pleasure andrelief to get back into the Zone at the next meal.

Deanna I came to see you while on holiday in Wellington and just wanted to let you know how I was getting on. I have stopped eating rice and all high starch food and feel FANTASTIC! Thankyou. I'm not sure why it took me so long to do it. Melanie Just want to let you know, I'm not following the zone strictly, every Friday night I eat whatever I want and some days I have 12 blocks instead of 11 but I have lost weight, my jeans are now loose. Elaine Just thought I would give you an update on how things are going .....so far I can hardly believe what is happening in 9 days I have lost 7kgs and have not felt hungry finding it difficult with shifts to fit in all the snacks though. Lost an inch all over. My only problem has been low blood pressure so drinking heaps of water now again this is a problem when rushing around on the wards but I am overcoming it .......I think. Loving it so far can't see that I will get bored as can adapt all foods we like (my daugher has lost 4kgs) UIrene I attended seminar on 13/2 - Now that I'm back from holiday am getting into the Zone, really noticing the benefits i.e can tell the difference when not following properly.
Shiels I am enjoying the effects of eating in the Zone and have found that my irritable bowel has calmed right down and not caused any problems at all since beginning this way of eating. I will have a few unfavourable foods every now and then and certainly notice the difference to how I feel – almost immediately.
I have lost 9cm from my waist and 6cm from my hips. I am going to the gym and working on balance and strengthening of the body. The muscles have started to show again. With the weather the way it is, I am not going our for my walks as regularly but am happy with how my body is responding to the change in eating and I know that it will only get better. This is certainly not difficult and what I like best is that there is no guilt attached to deciding to eat something unfavourable and really enjoying it! Andrea Firstly, just wanted to let you know about my psoriasis. I have had psoriasis since I was15 years old - 46 years. Its on my knees, elbows, torso, ears and sometimes in the scalp. When I first started eating in the Zone, within a few weeks it also flared up on the backs of my legs. I cut down on tomatoes and it cleared up just as quickly as it arrived! Anyway I wanted to report the amazing changes I have had. My psoriasis has cleared up dramatically, over all the body. Obviously it is still there but does not appear as unsightly as it was, even with medication. I haven't used any medication for the last two weeks and it is still heaps better than it was. I really can't believe it - it must have something to do with diet, because its never cleared up like this before. Jane We are cruising in the zone and have recruited a new Zony - call Sue from Auckland and she is going to contact you guys and get inspired! We are well and happy. Been a bit out of the zone but Errol is looking "buffed" as an 18year old gym bunny told him. Errol asked what "buffed" meant and she said "ripling with muscle" - so Errol is "stoked!!!" Bridget Just to let you know that we are still "In the Zone".My husband has lost 10 kilos and his Blood pressure has dropped, and I have lost 6kilos and have been off my Cholesterol Medication for several weeks.... thefirst time in 7 years!!!, my level is now 4.3 ,so I am really pleased and we both have the added advantage of feeling great, and our clothes are very loose now, so looks like a new wardrobe real soon!!! So thanks for your help. Irene Hi Carol & KevinI thought you might be interested in my brother Ian's experience with the Zone. Hypercholesterolaemia runs in our family and Ian's first tests in 2001 showed a cholesterol level of 8 with LDLs of 5.3. As a fit and slim person whose diet was by no means bad he was very indignant. Determined not to go on drugs he followed all the conventional advice regarding diet and managed gradually over the years to reduce it to 5.6 with LDLs of 3.1.
After I attended the Prozone seminar and purchased the book I left my copy with him while passing through Tauranga. It all made good sense to him so he started following it (not completely 100% but more often than not) and his last lipid count was cholesterol 4.8, LDL 2.5, HDL 2.15 Triglycerides 0.4 and Ratio 2.2. As you can imagine he was exceptionally pleased. As try as he might he hadn't been able to get his cholesterol below 5, and had been told without drugs he would only reduce it by 20% at the most! He is an experienced Toastmaster and recently gave a speech entitled 'Do you believe your Doctor' detailing his experience which received enthusiastic feedback.
Hazel. Thanks guys, I am enjoying the Zone. I am starting to feel really good with it . I have had good results with the recipes that I concocted and have had at least 4-5 hours clarity in my focus with it. I am starting to get a real handle on the whole block thing as well as well as sticking to it yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My energy levels have started to increase and I have had whole days with being able to carry on with my activities as well as staying focused. That has been a huge bonus. I also have been doing exercise as well for three days consistently a week for the last three weeks. It has been a good start and I finally feel as if I am making progress. Murray You will see by the attached that the shrinkage is working well. It is great to be back zoning along - I am today wearing a pair of formerly 'retired' pants from the back of the wardrobe which I had no show of doing up for the last couple of years. They fit me better now than they did when I bought them at least 5 or 6 years ago. Most of my clothes are now looking like they belong to my 'big brother' so a new wardrobe is looming. In the last week I have managed a 16km walk, swum 400m in the pool at one session, and knocked 17mins off the time it used to take me to do my regular morning walk - down from 80mins to 67mins. Today I made a commitment to, next March, enter a triathalon event - something I would not even have contemplated or considered remotely possible three months ago. I recognise it will take me time to build fitness, swimming and cycling skills but believe that; through keeping in the Zone, and the work I have done already and am committed to keep doing to be more active and healthy, I can do it. So goodbye aspartame.I have to admit after starting the zone only last Tuesday I have far more energy ,it is hard to believe,Even with the chronic back pain and drugs that I am on. I even believe what you are say about not being tired and sleeping better. I have never had a problem sleeping but it is a different sleep. I dont know how much weight I have lost because I am not into weighing but things are looser. But a big thank you
Kim In one of your newsletters last year you mentioned about clothes that have become too big can be given to an organisation for getting women back into the workforce that need clothes for interviews etc. Can you please supply this to me as I'm finding lots of clothes are now too big but are too good to just throw away and I would love to give these to women in need. Thanks heaps. Sheila Since attending the seminar for ProZone on 13 of this month, I have been a pretty good Zonie and feel great! I was surprised how reasonably easy it was to stick to while away on business in the first week - actually left the next morning and spent three days in a hotel etc. Not too bad, considering I hadn't had time to read the booklet before. I took it with me but was so caught up in meetings, work and dinners etc, I never got a chance. I made full use of the protein bars for snacks and so felt really good most of the time. On returning from the trip away, I then got sick with a serious head cold and sticky throat. Not put off my food, luckily, but made it interesting. Well, I believe these things are certainly sent to test our resolve and so was thrilled when I had lost 2kg and 2cm off both waist and hips following the unusual start to the Zone eating. This week has gone really well and I weigh myself on Tuesday morning - so feel confident that more fat has disappeared. I feel great and have lots of energy - even managed to walk the beach a few times when sick - not as energetic as usual but it's all exercise. I am a very positive person normally, anyway, but was getting a little down about not shifting the weight in the conventional manner. It had always worked before!!!! (I can picture your smiles here). My husband has commented that he has noticed I am not so edgy about my clothes not fitting properly, and I am not as preoccupied about the weight. Good news all round! We were introduced by you to the Zone about 3 Years ago and can honestly say we were in the Zone wholly for a good 18 months. We are now semi zone (75% daily) as we probably eating a bit more carbohydrate on the rice, pasta side (but definitely a lot less than pre zone knowledge days) , although in saying this we always have a 100% zone breakfast (the protein porridge) , and snacks particularly on work days. Overall our family is eating a lot smarter and better, including our 17 year old teenage son. My husband’s chloresterol levels which had a tendency to fluctuate up and down pre zone, have now stablised at a good level. (ProZone note: people often find a level that they are comfortable with and still achieve their goals. They know and understand what different foods contain and how they affect them. They also know the better they do it the better the results). Elaine Started on Prozone diet earlier this year and lost 10 kg in a few weeks felt great and younger !!! Unfortuneately I then spent 5 months in Europe eating and drinking and doing all those things that I had forgotten about .. Much of the time we were socialising and having meals cooked for us so little control. I think we both ate less of the 'naughty' things and both only gained 5 kg in 5mths. I have been back in the country for 6 weeks So far have managed to lose the 5 and another 2 kgs so feeling really good . I came to see you at the beginning of May 2006 with the aim of being slimmer and healthier by the time I visited my family in the UK in September. I feel like a new person. My family and friends were blown away by how I looked - not just my weight-loss (they hadn't seen me for 4 years) but also the glow of my skin and the sparkle in my eyes. As the oldest amongst my siblings and cousins - I was also the healthiest! My view of life is quite different because of how I feel about my new image, and as a result, I have found a new career about which I am passionate, and have even found a new partner. I continue to eat in The Zone most of the time (I don't want to get any smaller!) as I know I feel less healthy when I eat otherwise. I have NEVER stuck to a diet for a whole week before and have almost always cheated myself by having something I shouldn't have. EXCEPT FOR NOW..... I know it is mostly water - but I have lost 3kg so far and I haven't even managed to start my exercise regime yet. I have stuck purely to The Zone and I don't feel hungry between meals and I haven't once craved for chocolate (which was my big downfall after dinner). I am so proud of myself for doing that alone as I have had this chocolate habit for many many years. And a good encouragement too. Marianne Hi Kevin, It's only been a week but I've been amazed at how much my body seems to have re-programmed itself without hassle. It's like my biochemistry has reorganised itself and doesn't want sweet foods, so there's no mental angst involved in not eating them. I just don't have the same 'out of control' urge to consume them. I've been working in Auckland for a few days so haven't had the same ability to 'compose' my meals but, notwithstanding, I've managed very well. And when I had an 'out of zone' brunch with a friend this morning, because I was disappointed with the taste and texture of the meal, I didn't finish it. Previously I would have. Thanks for the time you took to explain it all. That, plus my reading of the book, and your wonderful magnets, has given me a good understanding of the simple tools to manage my way through the first week.
