There was an article in the DomPost on Saturday about so-called healthy drinks.  It opens with “Fruit juices and smoothies represent a new risk to our health because of the amount of sugar the apparently healthy drinks contain”.

While there is very little dispute over the amount of sugar and dangers in soft drinks it is enlightening that so called “healthy drinks” are finally being recognized for what they are.  A glass of freshly squeezed orange juice may contain up to 6 oranges or 12 blocks of carbohydrate.  I have had people come to see me who say “I have a healthy fruit smoothie for breakfast”.   By the time I lay it out on the BlockBuilder™ they can see in an instant that they have had something like 12 or more blocks of carbohydrate, no protein and no fat.  No wonder they are not thinking clearly, are hungry a couple of hours after their breakfast and are steadily gaining weight.

It is so easy to make a balanced smoothie.  Here’s the recipe:

1 cup trim milk

1/2 cup frozen blueberries or 1 cup strawberries or raspberries or 1 kiwifruit (stay away from bananas which are a huge sugar load)

1 scoop ProZone protein powder (or some other protein powder that is at least 90% pure protein)

8 almonds or 1 & 1/3 tsp olive oil

blend all ingredients or eat nuts separately

How quick and easy is that.  It will be satisfying as the protein and fat will help you feel full.
