Everyone is talking about “That Sugar Film” and the book by Damon Gameau in Australia.

For 2 months Damon changed his healthy diet to eating the same number of calories but from “healthy” alternatives.  He didn’t eat lollies and biscuits or drink fizzy drinks but he did eat low fat yogurt, drinks like Up & Go and other foods with lots of sugar in them in order to eat 40 teaspoons of sugar a day in his diet.  Fortunately he was closely monitored by doctors, blood tests and other advisors (who mostly told him not to do it at all!).

The results were seriously scary.  He went from being a healthy guy to having fatty liver and awful blood test results – in just 60 days!  He also had trouble concentrating and keeping up his exercise regime.

While this was stunning to see, it was not surprising to me.  At ProZone we have been talking about sugar since 1998.  Dr Sears wrote his first book, “Enter the Zone” in 1995 and John Yudkin, who was briefly mentioned in the movie, wrote his book “Pure, White and Deadly” in 1976.  John Yudkin’s crusade lost out to the low fat lobby at the time which has proved catastrophic for the thousands of people who have developed heart disease, diabetes and other adverse conditions due to the underlying inflammation caused by eating too much sugar.

As Dr Sears says, “It’s not fat that makes you fat, it’s sugar that makes you fat”.

The awful fact is that New Zealand has the third highest consumption of sugar in the world after the USA and Mexico.  3 in 10 adults and 1 in 10 kids are obese.  The burden on our health system is threatening to be overwhelming unless we do something to turn it around.

If you want to know more, please contact me at ProZone.  In the meantime, please go and see the movie.  It should be compulsory viewing for everyone.
